Building the Shed

Our Red Shed came flatpacked. A lot of volunteer and professional effort later we had a shed ready for use.

When? constructed 2020. Kitted out 2021 onwards.
Partners: lots of volunteer hours from John Mooney and Alan Johnson. Darren Kirk construction with the serious work.

When we opened the Community Hub at 82 Grimsby Road there was always an intention to make the most of the open yard at the rear of the building. The vision was a ‘men in sheds’ type space where the community could come and ‘get their hands dirty’ with crafts and activities.

Covid restrictions had been lifted and Development Worker John Mooney hunted down a suitable ‘kit’ and the work began.

In a short, but busy time we moved from this:

and a flatpack delivery…

to a finished building…

Once the shed was assembled and whole for the first time.

And a lots of steps in between…

Hammond House Productions helped produce a video to document the build of the new Red Shed.

Most of the funding for the building came directly from Big Local North Cleethorpes. But additional funding was found from external partners too. Development Worker, John Mooney sourced the shed itself and put in a lot of hours into the construction work. But local resident Alan Johnson was also instrumental in the build.

Local builder Darren Kirk was brought in for all the heavy lifting and professional services to ensure the shed was built properly. Despite paying for Darren and his time, the huge number of volunteer hours put in meant Big Local North Cleethorpes got a building fit for purpose for far less than expected.

Inside and outside of the shed itself have then developed over the years.

Inside

A bare structure slowly had shelves and more and more added…
Shelving and storage was added, along with heating and wifi

Outside

Once everything was ready, the doors were painted (by local artist Lynsey Powles) in memory of our friend and colleague Ian Brocklebank. The yard was tidied and benches installed and the shed became available for use for meetings and by groups.

A later addition was to astro-turf some of the yard and then benches were installed.
