Cleethorpes Beach Festival

A live music event funded by Big Local and organised by young people. Held on North Promenade to draw people to the area and incorporating a beach sports event

When? 2015
Partners: VANEL. YMCA. Lincs Inspire. DFDS.

Lots of people got involved with a beach event as part of a celebration and early Big Local event to engage the community

This project was one of the earliest arts and music activities supported by Big Local North Cleethorpes. It originally came under the first plan theme of “Development of Local Facilities and Amenity Land for Culture, Leisure and Recreation: Community Arts Initiative”.

The event itself involved four bands playing live music on a mobile stage parked along North Promenade. Alongside the main music event, partner organisations YMCA and Lincs Inspire organised a Beach Sports event held on North Beach.

The stage itself was portable – a trailer loaded by local haulage firm DFDS and parked on a disused space along North Promenade. And before the trailer could arrive, volunteers needed to clear the space of rubbish and weeds to create a ‘clean’ area for seating for visitors.

Young people from VANEL’s youth projects organised the event which was funded by Big Local. Portable toilets had to be brought in as the local toilet block was not open for public use at the time.
The event brought in residents and was a first experiment for Big Local on how to stage a live arts event to engage the public and partners. The initiative connected to a range of Big Local objectives: engaging the public; engaging with North Promenade Traders; tidying up the local environment; engaging volunteers; providing a music and arts event; training and encouraging young people to run their own project.

Music played out from the lorry stage provided by DFDS
Various beach sports helped engage young people on the day
