Community Garden

A small but useful community green space and garden at the 82 Grimsby Road community hub

When? since 2019

View down the garden towards the Red Shed. Note benches, water butt and there is now a hot composter and garden storage too

The space around 82 Grimsby Road was essentially concrete yards when Big Local took over the building. Once the Red Shed was built and in place, we started trying to brighten up the remaining outdoor spaces into what we know as our ‘plant pot garden’.

A local builder built our raised beds from sleepers, we introduced other pots, a water butt and eventually some benches and a picnic table. For a while there was a hot composter until this was allocated to another green project elsewhere.

Local resident gardner Alan Johnson did a lot of the initial planting, but since then this has been a very hands-on gardening space for groups that visit.

For a short while one of the little Green Influencers group was using the garden space to meet and work on the beds. Other volunteers have also been in to use the space. And we also make use of the space now for social events or event crafts and arts workshops.

A versatile space brightening up the concrete yard and connecting our visitors with nature!
