A final legacy art project working with local young people on art around North Cleethorpes

This was an arts project to work with local young people to paint the shutters at the Big Local community hub at 82 Grimsby Road with a new legacy art design. The project also involved art workshops to get the young people to work together and get involved. And the final element was to create a series of diorama miniature scenes to be displayed around North Cleethorpes as part of an art trail.
This project, at the end of 2024, was almost the very last project supported by Big Local North Cleethorpes. The project was entirely funded by Create North East Lincolnshire (CreateNEL) as match funding into the area and was run by Capacity Buildings Ltd. Local artist Lynsey Powles led all the art elements of the programme. Big Local’s role was really to support the initiative and allow permission to paint our shutters!
The most important element of the project was to get local young people involved. The cohort of people (aged around 14-17) had a few workshops led by the artist Lyns Powles which were held at both the Red Shed at 82 Grimsby Road and at the TickART office studios on the railway station.
The young people chose design elements for the shutters that meant something about North Cleethorpes to them. Then with the support of the artist, they actually got involved with the spray painting.
Workshops
Dioramas
Around 2018 artist Lyns Powles created a number of small dioramas placed around Cleethorpes. Over the years some of these had gone or decayed. As part of this project, Lyns prepared four more scenes to place around Cleethorpes and to form part of an arts trail.

Now on display in the garden at the Big Local community hub at 82 Grimsby Road. Accessible for viewing during opening hours.
Diorama at the TickART Office
Reflecting the rail heritage of the building, this scene can be seen whenever the TickART office is open or by appointment. It’s not currently outside due to keep it safe.

The Pavilion diorama is behind a gate at the side of the building and can be viewed at any time.

The diorama at the library – the new caravan – is a replacement for the original which had survived over 4 years of weathering! It’s visible at any time behind the gate near to the front entrance.
