We worked on a number of ways to make the streets around North Cleethorpes look better – most of them including plants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When? 2015-2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Statistically we discovered that Sidney Sussex Ward has one of the lowest tree covers for a ward in the whole country. And a walk down some of the North Cleethorpes streets demonstrated a need for ‘green’ improvements. Whilst North Cleethorpes has a good range of Parks, local residents told us they thought the whole area could look better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, over the years Big Local North Cleethorpes has invested time and money in a range of approaches to ‘greening’ the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North Promenade Planters<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

An ongoing project since about 2018. We initially worked with businesses along North Promenade to jointly fund 26 bedding plant planters over the Summer seasons. For two years these planters (installed thanks to support from the Council and tended by volunteers) brightened up not just North Prom, but further along the Cleethorpes promenade generally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 2020 we changed the planters to Palm trees (to lower costs and maintenance and to make them more sustainable). Since 2020 until 2025 (and beyond) the (eight) planters continue to brighten up the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A very visible, Big Local branded initiative, we hope helps cheer up the area for visitors and residents alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Issacs Hill Roundabout<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

For two years we invested funding to provide floral displays on Issacs Hill roundabout. This brightened up a key route into Cleethorpes and helped promote Big Local North Cleethorpes at the same time. North East Lincolnshire Council installed the planters on our behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hanging Baskets<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

We funded a couple of hanging baskets on a couple of street lights for one year including directly outside the community hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local Streets<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Very early in the life of the Big Local programme we supported local residents in a few streets (around Barcroft Street & Daubney Street) who wanted to install street planters in their area. Usually these were in streets where there were active Neighbourhood Watch Groups. Planters were put in place (with permission of the Council and Highways) and then planted up and tended by the local residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A decade on some of the planters have gone and many are in disrepair, but still, some residents continue to tend to their local planters. It would be nice to have a new way to fund and improve these street planters going forward but for now at least some remain to break up the monotony of pavements locally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local Alleyways<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Around 2014, Big Local funded Barcroft Street Neighbourhood Watch to improve their Alleyway with a bit of green planting. Sadly the Neighbourhood Watch Group eventually closed down, but for a while residents continued to tend to their alleyways (and at one point to some Big Local funded lamppost hanging baskets)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grimsby Road and trees<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In 2019 Big Local North Cleethorpes worked with local Councillors, North East Lincolnshire Council Environmental Services; Highways; Tree specialists and others to ‘walk’ the streets of North Cleethorpes (particularly Grimsby Road) to investigate ways to improve the Street Scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some trees were recommended to cut back. Some area of the streets were identified as possible locations for new tree plantings or planters. But unfortunately, largely due to the unexpectedly high costs involved, little of this work (other than ongoing maintenance) ended up happening. Big Local hoped to achieve more but at least in some instances we were able to support local businesses in their approaches to the tree maintenance people in the Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big Local North Cleethorpes has had some success with projects improving the local street scene with green initiatives. We’ve also worked on many other green initiatives such as our Green Route and various park and allotment based approaches and the street scene efforts complement these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
