The geographical area covered by Big Local North Cleethorpes has specific issues which Big Local set out to address
North Cleethorpes is an unusual Big Local area in that it comprises a strip of land along the South Bank of the Humber which contains five areas designated by the government as lower super output areas and encompasses a large part of Sidney Sussex Ward and a smaller part of Croft Baker Ward. This means that there isn’t a real centre to the area and that the groups which operate in the area, and purely for the area, tend to focus on their own ward or street as their place of interest.
Having said that, North Cleethorpes is also part of a Seaside Town which relies on visitors and holiday makers for a major part of its trade. The boundaries of North Cleethorpes contain areas of real local interest and concern including Chapman’s Pond, Cleethorpes Pier, Wonderland and the run down North Promenade.

Big Local North Cleethorpes funding was originally very focused and had to be invested for the designated geographical area only. That meant projects needed to directly benefit residents and organisations within the Big Local North Cleethorpes ‘footprint’.
This theoretically meant that organisations outside of the footprint could be supported as long as their beneficiaries were from within the area. By generally the committee tried to focus most of our investments directly into our area.
In the second half of the programme we were a little more flexible to support initiatives nearby or adjacent to the footprint. However, the partnership was always very clear that the benefits had to reflect back within our area.
Some notable points of interest within the Big Local North Cleethorpes footprint include:
– A long retail street down Grimsby Road. Further retail in the core town centre of Cleethorpes including St Peter’s Avenue.
– Grimsby Town Football Club Stadium.
– The beaches – especially North Beach.
– A pier and a long promenade. North Promenade specifically has a strip of businesses.
– Cleethorpes Railway Station.
– Cleethorpes Library.
– Sidney Sussex Recreation Ground and Sidney Park – two large open spaces.
– Chapmans Pond
– Several community buildings – the Pavilion on Sussex Rec; Memorial Hall; Camden Crescent community centre.
– A number of churches including church halls
– A couple of schools
– Adjacent allotments at Carr Lane (but not directly within our footprint)
– Considerable housing stock of various demographics.
– Business, commercial and retail offerings. Charity Shops.
– A small number of local charitable and voluntary sector organisations nearby that serve the area, but very few directly based within the footprint.
– Council offices
– Community Fire Station
– Police station at the Knoll
The area is thus very varied and has given Big Local North Cleethorpes both opportunities and challenges during the programme to work with partners, to utilise the resources and assets in the area and to address any unique issues that the area presents.
