Commissioned Art

Over the years Big Local North Cleethorpes funded various original pieces of artwork in North Cleethorpes. Either using local artists or art on local themes.

Partners: Creative Start. Lynsey Powles. various funders

As well as various ‘arts’ based projects, Big Local North Cleethorpes has directly funded a number of pieces of artwork for North Cleethorpes. Some are in North Cleethorpes. Some are from North Cleethorpes artists or maybe shown North Cleethorpes scenes. As of 2025 all of these are still available for the community to enjoy.

Poplar Road Community Fire Station Mural

For many years, Big Local North Cleethorpes held our meetings at the Cleethorpes community fire station. So we commissioned a long mural on the inside corridor to reflect the history of the station itself.

The mural was a collaborative efforts painted by various people under the direction of Creative Start. You can read more about the mural here.

In 2022, Big Local sponsored a North Prom fringe part to the annual Reclaim Urban Arts Festival organised by Grimsby artist Lynsey Powles. As part of the event a couple of local walls were painted live and left as long term art installations. This first one on the walls of Cleethorpes Library gardens.

Pitstop in the Park

The cafe building in Sidney Park had the back wall painted around 2017 by artist Lyns Powles and funded by Big Local. In 2023, as part of the Reclaim Urban Arts Festival, Lyns was commissioned by Big Local to paint the front of the Pitstop with their new logo.

Three commissioned artworks

Also as part of the Reclaim Festival 2023, Big Local asked artist Lyns Powles to ask local artists to produce new art pieces with their depictions of North Cleethorpes scenes. A photograph and two artworks was the result. These are now on moving display around North Cleethorpes.

82 Grimsby Road

The community hub at 82 Grimsby Road has shutters that are down when we are closed. To celebrate the end of the programme in 2024 a final art project repainted the shutters and commissioned four small dioramas.

The shutters were painted by local young people with their own ideas about the area. The dioramas are on show at venues around Cleethorpes. Whilst Big Local did not directly fund these artworks, we were involved in obtaining the funding and commissioning the work.
